Help employees access in-network care while traveling

June 25, 2024

Wherever your employees travel, it’s important they understand their benefits and know where to access care when they’re away from home. Share these tips to help them plan ahead before their next trip.

Benefits review: Before any vacation or business trip, employees should sign in at regence.com (create an account) or download the Regence app to review their benefits. An account gives them easy access to their health plan while away from home. Employees can find in-network doctors, access their virtual member ID card and have all their health insurance info at their fingertips.

Traveling in the U.S.: Your employees have access to the largest network of doctors and hospitals—including more than 2 million providers nationwide—with BlueCard®. All Regence plans include urgent and emergency BlueCard coverage. Depending on their plan, employees may also be able to see local BlueCard providers for nonemergency issues.

Finding care: To find in-network doctors, hospitals or clinics when away from home, employees should use Find a Doctor when signed in on regence.com or the Regence app. They can also call 1-800-810-BLUE 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or use the National Doctor and Hospital Finder to find in-network doctors.

What to expect: When employees arrive at the doctor’s office or hospital, they’ll need to present their member ID card. After receiving care, they shouldn’t need to complete any claims forms or pay up front for any services outside the usual out-of-pocket expenses. Later, they’ll receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) from Regence as usual.

Access virtual care: Virtual care is a convenient and affordable option when traveling in the U.S. Employees can visit with a doctor and get a diagnosis, treatment plan and prescription sent to the nearest pharmacy. If your plan includes Advice24, they can also talk to a registered nurse and get guidance anytime. Employees should sign in on regence.com or the Regence app to see their available virtual care options.

Traveling internationally: Blue Cross Blue Shield Global® Core connects employees with health care professionals, hospitals and medical assistance when traveling or living outside the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Prior to departing, employees can call Regence Customer Service to review their international coverage, then visit Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Core or download their app to see if there are in-network hospitals at their destination. Employees will need to present their member ID card when receiving care. In most cases, they won’t need to pay up front for inpatient services.

Please share these tips and our international travel checklist with your employees.
