Text messaging campaign targets employees’ diabetes screening needs

April 23, 2024

Diabetes affects about 38 million Americans—approximately 12% of the U.S. population. Untreated, it can lead to serious conditions. While preventive care benefits cover in-network screenings for diabetes-related conditions at no out-of-pocket cost, not all employees take advantage of these potentially life-saving benefits.

During Q2 2024, we’re sending text messages to members about how regular screenings can detect potentially serious conditions related to diabetes and high blood pressure at their earliest stage, when they’re most treatable. Our goal is to increase the utilization of these screenings, which include:

  • Kidney screening: A test to determine how well the kidneys are working
  • Retinal eye exam: Usually requires an ophthalmologist, although some primary care providers (PCPs) can perform it in conjunction with an annual physical
  • HbA1c test: A glucose blood test to monitor blood-sugar levels

Sample notification

Here’s an example of the messaging we’ll send eligible employees and covered dependents who have opted in to receive text notifications and have provided a valid cell phone number:

Hi [First Name]. This is Regence. Our records show you may be due for an important health check. Getting this check could help you stay on track with your health. *To protect your privacy, no additional information will be shared unless you reply* YES. Please review the Text Messaging Terms and Conditions. (This links to a campaign-specific bit.ly URL.)

Reply Yes if you’re ready to learn more and get started. >>> Recipient receives a reply: Thank you for confirming! We will send you text messages we hope you find helpful.

Reply Help for help. >>> Recipient receives a reply: Care advocates will call you regarding your questions and about getting you the help you need.

Recipients can also Reply Stop to stop receiving text messages, or Wrong if not the individual named in the text.

If a recipient requests help, our care advocates can answer questions, help schedule one or more screenings, and ask them about any barriers they have to seeking care and keeping current with screenings.

Personalization behind the member outreach

This form of communication supports our strategy of providing a personalized experience to increase members’ use of preventive care. The campaign targets eligible fully insured and self- funded group employees, Individual members and Medicare members who’ve been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and hypertension and who have screening gaps.

While text messaging outreach can increase needed screenings, it can’t reach everyone. That’s why it’s important to encourage your employees to visit our preventive care list to understand all the preventive services their health plan covers at no out-of-pocket cost.
